If you come into contact with an electrical hazard call 911 immediately

Electrical Hazards During Water Damage Cleanup

Following water damage, it is crucial to avoid shock hazards while cleaning up. Electrical hazards can arise when electrical equipment comes into contact with water, increasing the risk of electrocution and electrical fires.

How to Avoid Shock Hazards

  • Turn off the power at the main breaker. This is the most important step to take before beginning any cleanup.
  • Do not touch any electrical equipment or wires that are wet. If you must move or remove equipment, use rubber gloves and dry wooden tools.
  • Be aware of downed power lines. If you see any downed power lines, stay away from them and call 911 immediately.
  • Do not use electrical appliances or tools in wet areas. This includes washing machines, dryers, and vacuum cleaners.
  • Keep children and pets away from electrical hazards. They are more likely to be curious and touch something they shouldn’t.

Call 911 Immediately

If you come into contact with an electrical hazard, call 911 immediately. Do not try to help the victim yourself unless you are a trained electrician.
